I got around to ginning up enough courage and enthusiasm to pull the old Moen 1222 and replace it with a 1222HD that I got from an Amazon supplier. Wouldn't you know it, I didn't have the strength to pull the old one out. So I had to trundle off to Home Depot to purchase the correct tool to replace it and also as a nod to the axiom "He who dies with the most tools wins". I am an avid pack rat and, true to form, a nice shiny new Moen metal handle caught my eye, so I had to purchase it to replace that tired old plastic OEM knob that is some 26 years old.

Mom's toenails weren't hurting her, but her sense of feeling in her feet is weird due to diabetic polyneuropathy. She has hammer toes because she didn't go to a doctor when her toes started curling up from high arches. It runs in the family. Her oldest sister got hammertoes as well and went through surgery to straighten them but then stubbed one of the toes and broke it so it was stuck sticking straight up. Doctors had to amputate it. Mom is not a candidate for foot surgery due to the diabetes issues. My brother started to develop it but got to a podiatrist in time and now wears orthopedic shoes. I have high arches as well but I regularly stretch my toes and do toe exercises. Mom does walk around but not much. Her back usually hurts her when she walks and she refuses to go to physical therapy.

I have two black cats. But I live out in the middle of nowhere and it rained all day on Halloween. No Trick-or-Treating in town either because the mayor banned it. Back when I was a teenager the mayor allowed it, but the city ordinances limited it to kids 13 and under. I remember one of my classmates saying that she was 14 and had been taking her younger siblings trick-or-treating but she wore a costume too and the cops who knew her and her family arrested her and kept her in jail overnight. She didn't say what happened with her younger siblings.

The weather here decided it isn't ready for autumn and its been in the upper 80s. Past couple days its been raining AND in the 80s. Since the AC isn't working it's been even hotter inside the house. Even Mom is using fans and she normally complains about it being too cold. I've been sweating a ton. My cats have been sleeping on surfaces that aren't as warm.

It's interfered with my plans to paint the doors-- too much humidity-- and install new locksets. The back door popped open twice yesterday and rain blew into the house and onto the floor. I was going to install the new strikeplate but the wind kept blowing the rain in every time the door was open. My friends and I have been commiserating about how much the weather sucks. Best friend has been sick the past week. First kidney stones and then some kind of stomach bug.
Diabetic polyneuropathy , terrible words that I am familiar with. Been to neurologists. And specialist neurologist... they just shrug thier shoulders and say, nothing we can do, here have some gabapenton (NOT)....
Two suppliments I take that actually help are R-lipoic acid, (has to be just plain R, not plain lipoic acid) and benfotiamine. They help take the sting out, makes life livable.

Movie recommendation "The Simple Life of Noah Dearborn"
(from me/doug in Maine, knowledge of plumbing low, but a retired DIY type with time to burn...)

Y'all, I'm not the type to post day to day details of my life, but having read this forum for a year or so, feeling more and more like you're kinduv'an extended family to me now (my sweetie's a 2 hr drive from me, so it's just me and my wild/5yo golden retriever in a 2006 home I've had 4-5 yrs). This movie: I think it started on Netflix in 1999, which may explain why I never heard of it until I got a hint from my endless utube shorts-surfing....)

If you have Amazon Prime it's FREE streaming at least now (and probably still on netflix?), so check out the 90min movie "The Simple Life of Noah Dearborn". Sidney Poitier plays a young-ish 90+ old man (in a house with no electricity, and they don't mention plumbing or show a toilet, sink?) with very little to say (socially recluse, so what few words he does say, are just perfect). Watch with your sweetie(s) and even kids, nothing more than a kiss on the neck for romance-on-screen, nothing more violent than a punch in the face for violence, a blessed mix of sad-then-uplifting that brought tears to my eyes.

Mom takes Dilantin and Amitriptyline for her polyneuropathy. Dad was taking gabapentin but it wasn't working much. VA doctors told him "too bad" and refused to treat. The neurologist kept insisting he had Diabetes and refused to do anything-- despite the fact that he did not have Diabetes and repeatedly told the neurologist that.

Doug I think I've heard of that movie but never saw it. Love Sidney Poitier.

I had to explain to my friend this morning that the kittens did not give his toddler Parvo-- it can't pass from animals to humans and that he kicked them out for no reason. As I suspected, that was just an excuse bc he didn't want to deal with them not being well litter trained and didn't want to give them a chance to learn. So, they will either have to find homes or they will most likely die. I love my friend but he's a terrible pet owner. He wasn't like that before the TBI. He has much less patience since then. He just told me his toilet is leaking. I wonder if its from the seal at the bottom or from the tank.

Woke up sweating and keep hoping it will cool off outside and then cool off inside. Felt like crap yesterday and need to be productive today. I think I'll try to put the new strikeplate on the back door if its not raining.

Installed the new repair strikeplate on the back door. Good thing I bought strikeplates because apparently the handlesets I bought did not come with strikeplates. That was a surprise to me. In the past the ones I bought came with strikeplates but not these ones. You'd think they would with how much they cost. The package of the new strikeplate fell and one of the screws disappeared. I searched all around and used a magnet stick but couldn't find it. Installed one screw and then went looking for another. I knew my brother had replaced his strikeplate and used the new screws so I looked for the old ones with my magnet stick poking around the hallway near his door. Found one and was able to use it. It was a shorter but sturdier screw than the new screws. New screw started stripping out (I did pre-drill to minimize that) but the old screw went in easily.

It's 84 inside and 82 outside. ugh. I'm sweating like crazy because it's also damp.

Still in the 80s. I woke up completely soaked from head to toe. Bedding was soaked, pillows were soaked, pajamas were soaked. Blech. I want to get a tub of powder and roll in it at this point.

I went to Walmart and then popped in to visit my friend and his wife. Kelebrimbor ran to me and wanted to be held. My brother adores him and wants to bring him home. He chased after me when I was leaving so friend had to put out food to distract him. Discussed with my friend about his attempts to purchase a house. Seller was disappointed when he found out the appraisal was much lower than he'd thought and the damages were also worse. So new agreement is friend will rent to own for 6 months-- friend's labor repairing the damages will count as rent. Once 6 months have passed and friend has had time to fix stuff up, they will get another appraisal and see if they can get a mortgage. Seller realizes no one else will buy the place and he can't sell it like it is and is motivated to work with my friend.

We'll have to address the lead paint. Need to use an encapsulating paint. Looks like HomeDepot has something called LeadDefender. But we'll look at options. I see they sell stuff specifically for cleaning up lead. If we seal it up and then paint over it should be good.

Tomorrow I'm bringing my toilet jack over to friend's house so he can replace the wax seal. It's leaking.

I’ve heard of car jacks, hijacks, LoJacks, Jacks of Spades, Hearts, Clubs and Diamonds, and jacks of all trades but never a toilet jack.

There are reports on Ring of gun shots and explosions around here but, those of us in the know, know that they are fireworks celebrating Diwali or the Festival of Lights. Law enforcement has better things to do than run these reports to ground. God help us all!

Yup! The ol’ toilet jack was discussed on this here site a while back. 🥱

I was probably the one who brought it up since I bought one.

It was lower price at the time we bought it. I replaced the wheels with locking ones.

Friend wasn't feeling well today so the jack hasn't been brought over yet and I was waiting for AC people to show up. They just called and said they can't come until tomorrow morning.

My brother was being another type of jack today. The kind that brays. Told me to screw off when I asked him for help taking trash out and bringing in litter and cat food. Still need to get the litter. Ugh. He was raging mad about it being 86 inside. Taking out trash is his responsibility but he refuses to do it. I'm more sensitive to heat than he is and he's bragged in the past and lectured me like he's superior and says he doesn't let things stop him, he just pushes through bc he's so strong. But he's refusing to do anything bc its too hot. I get it, but it makes him a hypocrite bc I'm still having to do stuff and do his share of the chores again.

Need to go get the cat food before it gets dark though. And need to bring the jack over to friend's house.
