Moen Cartridge ID / Can't fit new trim kit

I have been struggling with this for a while.

The MOEN handle snapped off of my shower. I went out and bought a MOEN Chateau Lever Posi-Temp 1-Handle Shower Valve Trim Kit in Chrome at Home Depot because I wanted the same brand.

I am unable to slide the adapter onto the existing cartridge because it is too big to slide on.

It almost looks like the handle snapped off and left a corroded piece around the cartridge. Otherwise, maybe this is not a posi temp cartridge.

Do I need to replace this cartridge? If so, can I replace with posi temp? Do I just need a different fitting trim kit?

That is a positemp cartridge, looks like part of the old handle/handle adapter is still attached. Probably be best to swap the cartridge.

looks more like a 1225 cartridge. pull the sleeve off to see what you have
