Is there any other way (or system) to actually soften water over a salt usage system?

No there isn't. Unless you buy into the salt free softeners that use Potassium Chloride instead of Sodium Chloride.

DCPlumber, I let the salt be consumed to about the two to three inches in the brine tank.
to see if there was silt/deposits on the bottom. On the bottom, to my surprise, was a solid disc of melded salt. What happened?

Who here has a whole house water filter?

What kind of filter cartridge are you using in it?

How often do you change the cartridge and does it look like it is working, however you may want to define it?

Last question, did you get a water sample analysis that showed what was in your water before you decided to put in a filter?

To answer the original question, I have a so-called whole house filter under the kitchen sink to filter the cold water for cooking and drinking purposes. I bought the unit at Sears and use the taste and odor cartridge. The cartridge works well. The cartridges last about year unless the water company starts digging up the lines and stirring up sediment which cause the filter to get clogged and the cold water pressure to drop. I did not get any analysis. The bad tasting water was self-evident.

Well, I guess after time, that's the impurities and/or junk in the water supply that settles out there. Dump it, rinse out the tank and start over. Easy to do once the salt supply has been depleted.
