Can you see where the water is coming out at? If its new unless it was frozen and something just cracked? You obviously have an O-ring or NPT not tight enough? I am sure other members other then myself who are skilled tradesman will chime in and help you. Good luck. :)

This looks like I will have to take it apart and put it back together correctly.

Any other ideas like wrapping some sort of tape around it?

If the NPT is the issue and leaking? Yes you should have used a type of Teflon tape and or a liquid pipe dope sealant just for NPT. If you done the installation yourself? The instructions in the box would have outlined the proper steps to install the filter correctly. Be careful not to over tighten the NPT, because that to can damage your filter housing. Good luck.

Landlord installed, landlord should fix. Have you let him know it's leaking. You should be very careful messing with it without express permission as you could be liable for any damage.

I agree, If you were to snap off some of that old plumbing and not know how to shut off the water, things could get real ugly in a hurry!

That really is an ugly mess! I don't see a union on either side, so it's going to be a job to fix the leak if it's in the piping. I see a stain on the lever on the left side, might be leaking above that. I have had that kind of filter leak from the bypass valve mounted on top, it was easy to fix, but I don't remember what I did. I have also had to replace the O-ring, but I always keep a spare with my spare filters. I wonder if the filter is installed backwards, the shutoff valve is on the output side?
