I am sorry, but you have false information. Black cartridge works for whatever is in line, it can be anything - tub or shower.

It’s a mystery. I’ve scoured their website for simple info on their diverters and this is all I found.

Can you post pictures of your exact valve set up ?

That lever you have circled is what the op is talking about if you type in symmons t25a, or t25b it will show you the different colored cartridges, if you type one symmons s96-1 or s96-2 you will see two different valves on is for tub shower one is shower i think the op is trying to use the shower only cartridge in a tub shower valve

I agree the black T25b is for a shower but what I don’t understand is why they call it a diverter.

It’s a volume control if it’s built for a shower only model B valve, not a diverter unless their are multiple outlets. I’m not seeing that on the literature.

I’d love clarification. I think I’ll email them a link to this thread.

Their literature is incomplete and ambiguous.

i used to overhaul the shower faucet, it was a very complicated system. however once it was done they were a very good faucet for shower bath. i had special tools to remove the seat and other stuff. You might go to an old plumbing shop and ask around who was repairing Symmons valves these days. we were specialists and other plumber would call us in.

The black cartridge is for shower only valves it only does volume, the white cartridge will switch from shower head to spout

I am sorry, you have wrong information. Black cartridge controls whatever is in line - shower or tub. Yes, it only does volume - this is exactly what I wrote before.

Thank you, best advice so far. I had a plumber helping to remove the cartridge, but he was not able to resolve the volume issue. I didn't know how to get a knowledgeable person.

I just got off the phone with Symmons tech support.

They answered within 2 minutes.

The black spindle is for volume control only.

The white spindle is for diverting.

They are not interchangeable.

So there ya go.

I mentioned the same thing in post #22
Yep, but Symmons doesn’t state that anywhere that I could find and the OP was saying you had “ false information “

You didn’t have false info. ✌️

For those who are curious about what happened: when I was replacing the black cartridge, it disintegrated, pieces fell down the pipe and clogged the diverter valve, which was working fine before.

Great thanks for an advice to find a plumber specializing in Symmons valves.

There are 2 types of diverters at Symmons: 1) built-in into a main valve with a small white cartridge, looking close to a black cartridge; 2) large separate diverter valve, Model 55-458-STN, the cartridge is huge, and can not be confused with a small black cartridge.

At least your plumber was able to see what you have ✌️👍
