Old Sta-Rite MSE4. Pump locked up? No water, I immediately shut off power to it. Thought at first it lost prime. Took the pressure gauge off and the regulator is full of water. Powered it back up and it sounded to me like the motor was humming, but the pump wasn't spinning. Ran back in and cut the power off again. Went back out and smelled that dreaded electrical stink. I have no idea how deep this well is. Would a Zoeller 1-HP 115 and 230-Volt 16-GPM Cast Iron Deep Well Jet Pump be a good replacement? School me please. BTW, it wasn’t due to temperature.

As was said, the smell and no worky could be from a blown start capacitor. The centrifugal start switch on the back of the motor would be the next thing to be destroyed from cycling on and off too much. Check that next. But even if the motor is blown, you can just get another motor. Everything else is probably ok.

When you get it back to working just remember all those problems are caused by the pump cycling on and off too much. Simply adding a Cycle Stop Valve can fix a lot of problems.

The capacitor was on the low end at 160, so I got a new one (185). I sanded the points and made sure the motor is not grounded out and it's still the same, no change. Finally, I tried to turn the shaft between the motor and the pump and it won't budge. I guess I should have started there, lol. I have no idea how deep this well is or how far down the pipe goes. Does the pipe usually touch bottom or dangle? What's the chances of a pump something like the one in the OP would work here? It's just really bad timing for us. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The center pipe is held up by the pump. But the leather cups will be stuck and make it hard to pull out. The ejector at the bottom needs to match the size of the pump. That Zoller is a horizontal not a vertical pump. Might make it work with a casing adapter, if the ejector at the bottom will work with that pump.

Sounds like the ball bearings are locked up. You have been very handy so far, maybe you can replace the bearings. More work but would be the least expensive way.
