Moen Shower Valve Cartridge

How many different shower valve cartridges are there for Moens besides the 1222? Do I need a special tool to remove it?

Often you don't need the tool. Just pull and go. But conditions can be onerous.
I like having a cartridge removal tool with me if I'm doing Moen.
Pretty sure it has what you need for every cartridge.

have it, it is the best for stuck Moen cartridges. Hasn't failed to remove yet. Paid for itself on the first use.

It’s been shipped to me. Rather than struggle with attempting to get the cartridge out without any tool, I will show up with the tool…

FWIW, the 'lifetime warranty replacement' cartridge I got from Moen was a rebuild kit consisting of a o-ring and the outer rubber seals, and a small tube of grease. (for cartridge #1225B). They used to send a complete cartridge.
This also happened for another Moen faucet I had, but can't remember the cartridge number.
Once you get the old cartridge out, you may be in for more work than you anticipated.
