Hi,

I am trying to understand the California Plumbing Code section 906 on "Vent Termination".
https://up.codes/viewer/california/ca-plumbing-code-2022/chapter/9/vents#9

1. Does the code require _every_ vent termination to extend above the roof (per 906.1) and hence prohibits termination through the sidewall?
2. What does the section 906.4 "outdoor installation" relate to?

I have a plan to extend the vent through the sidewall to meet the 10ft criteria above the ground and away from opening. This would terminate under eves (no soffit vents).

Looks like other build codes allow for it but not CPC?

903.1.4 Sidewall vent terminal.

Vent terminals extending through the wall shall terminate not less than 10 feet (3048 mm) from the lot line and 10 feet (3048 mm) above the highest adjacent grade within 10 feet (3048 mm) horizontally of the vent terminal. Vent terminals shall not terminate under the overhang of a structure with soffit vents. Sidewall vent terminals shall be protected to prevent birds and rodents from entering or blocking the vent opening.

Thanks,
Michal

DWV plumbing vents must extend through roof ONLY. My 2022 CPC does not show a 903.1.4 section, though, if an inspector in your jurisdiction would allow that, please come back and tell us about that novel concept. Seems sensible if adopted...but nowhere I've ever heard of in SF Bay area.
"outdoor" refers/related to, say, a backyard patio sink.

Thanks! That 903.1.4 is not from CPC, my bad I wasn't clear. It's IPC.

So CPC limits vent termination to through-roof only. :-( Though I cannot find an explicit statement about it. Only this seems relevant.

906.1 Roof Termination

Each vent pipe or stack shall extend through its flashing and shall terminate vertically not less than 6 inches (152 mm) above the roof nor less than 1 foot (305 mm) from a vertical surface. ABS and PVC piping exposed to sunlight shall be protected by water based synthetic latex paints.

The language is unclear here (to me). "shall extend through its flashing " infers through the roof?

I just come back from the office and yea, they told me it must go through the roof and must use either encased PVC/ABS or steel galvanized pipe (as it's outside).

Looks like older codes had this section but newer do not. Apparently it was removed in 2021.

And this (Hawaii 2018, based on UPC as well - i think this section is indeed from UPC-2018)

But not in latest 2021, huh?

906.1.1 Sidewall Venting

Where sidewall venting is utilized, the vent shall not terminate under a vented overhang of a building and shall be located in accordance with Section 906.2. The vent terminal shall be directed downward and covered with a 3/32 of an inch (2.4 mm) mesh screen to prevent the entry of vermin or rodents.
Note: Section 906.2 requires that each vent shall terminate not less than 10 feet (3048 mm) from, or not less than 3 feet (914 mm) above, an operable window, door, opening, air intake, or vent shaft, or not less than 3 feet (914 mm) in every direction from a lot line, alley and street excepted.
