My basement shower has the following valve system. We never use this shower but I would like to get it working just in case. The water was not coming on when opening the valve. I tore apart the wall and seen there were two screws on either side of the valve that were closed. I opened the right screw and got cold water to run but the left screw will not let hot water through. There is a large nut next to it that it tight and unable to be loosened. It appears this is causing the blockage for the hot water. Can anyone verify by what you see in the pic? I’m hoping to fix this myself without hiring someone so any advice is appreciated!

The large nut is most likely a pressure balancing spool, whish is probably stuck not letting water through. I would replace it. Do you know the manufacturer and model of the valve, do you have pictures of the cartridge and trim to share?

Try tapping on that large nut and that balance valve might pop loose, if not replace it. Make sure all the other valves going to that shower are open

That large nut normally comes off with jumbo screwdriver to reveal the balancing spool, which can be pulled out for servicing.
