What is this pipe?

this cpvc pipe is behind my washer and runs back into the wall about a foot. There looks like a brass valve or coupling in the middle.

I thought it may be a gas hookup for dryer when moved in but didn’t realize the pipe was cpvc.

Yes. My washer and dryer are upstairs and in a pan with a drain in it.

It is a trap primer, that when working properly, drips into the drain to keep it from drying out. Works on pressure drop, and often doesn't actually work as promised, but, it solves the issue for inspectors.
