Hi there!

Relatively New homeowners here, bought a home with a well. Well pump just failed a week or two ago. Guy who put in the pump said we should change the filter in about a week (said it is recommended to do so whenever a new pump is put in). We’re trying to do what seems like a simple task but everything we read online says ‘turn off water’ and then says at the well pump water Filter press the red pressure relief button on top. We did turn off water but there is no button. Just four screws on top.

so a few questions:
- by turning off the water do we just turn off the water valve by the water filter, or do we need to hit the breaker switch for the well pump to turn it off?
- if there’s no pressure relief button on the water filter, do we then have to run water after the well pump is turned off and wait until the well tank pressure is 0’d before unscrewing the casing for the water filter?

Turn off the ball valve to the right of the filter. Open cold faucet and leave it open. Change filter. Turn valve on. Close faucet.

What GReynolds says is the way to do it. But I think he missed the ball valve under the pressure tank. That is the one that should be closed before opening a faucet and unscrewing the filter housing. It is just the ball valve to the left of the filter instead of the right. :)

Once those filters are under pressure, they are impossible to unscrew. I'd spend a few minutes and add some bypass valves and also add a filter canister with the relief button, so the next time it needs to be changed, it will take just a minute instead of an hour.
