Water heater 18" above floor

HOw long has it been a code requirement to install a garage water heater 18" off the floor? This house is 20 years old.

I'm not sure, but does the code apply to electric water heaters as well as gas water heaters?

Pretty sure gas only. It's in my gas code not plumbing so I'm pretty sure it doesn't apply to electric but I may be wrong

Gas only. Not required for electric.

Thank you . I do see some electric water heaters in garages on an 18" stand. I guess there is no need for one as you all have stated for an electric water heater.
