Washing machine water controls

Feel free to laugh at me but I just moved into a new home and am attempting to do my first load of laundry. How can I tell which way the water valve should be to have cold water on? It looks like each water temp. has silver lever that can be pushed back or forward. How do I tell which is hot and which is cold (is hot always on the left and cold the right?), and how do I tell which position is open or closed? Thank you for your patience.

lever in line with the pipe is open, perpendicular to the pipe is close man.

Is the washer already hooked up? The inputs will be labeled, so that may provide a clue. My hot water is on the right, cold on the left (spigots)... If you want to know.. turn one on and let it run some water through it.. the hot one will heat up I know, not much help.. wish I could do more
