Vertical inlet into ell is ok or not?

So I need to get the tub drain into a 3" line as it makes a bend to the right to enter the main stack. Can I use a 3X1.5x3 ell to do this with the 1.5 inlet on the top of the ell, or do I need to push it farther back up the 3" run and have it do a 180 into the side of a 3x1.5x3 wye?

Only use the upstream wye. Side inlet on elbows are only for vents, not drains. Even then some inspectors balk at them.
