I have a shower that has had issues for a long time with sewer smell. I figured out that under the shower pan after the p-trap is probably an s-trap. Then the drain pipe goes outside. The shower drain is 15 inches to the outside of the house, where I could vent it pretty easily. If put a vent on the outside of the house on that drain, would that satisfy the code and take care of the smell? I'm just trying to avoid having to pull the pan, break the tiles and redo everything. Thank you.

If you do have an S-trap underground, there isn't much you can do to vent it outside the wall. See the diagram below. And an S-trap is against code, just so you know.

Adding a running trap outside the foundation outside may solve your problem but technically that would be illegal also. It would be double trapped at that point. It would be a running trap outside and running traps are frowned upon in most but not all circumstances. You’d need to add a vent outside just past the running trap also.

No way to satisfy code here without removing the s-trap and installing a ptrap.

So going back to the venting. Is running a vent outside the house legal? I did cut the line outside and added a vent there, and it seems to have dissipated the smell in that bathroom, but it's only been one day, so I'm not sure if that did the trick. Also I am not entirely sure there is an s-trap there. I know there is a p-trap and some weird turns, so I was assuming that it might be an s-trap but it might not be - especially since the vent seems to have worked. Thanks for your help!
