My bathroom sink has an old lever-operated drain pop-up, and an AC drain line plumbed into it via a branch in the copper tailpiece. The bottom of pipe itself is corroded, the lever pop-up often causes problems, and a wider AC branch would clog less easily.

I'm thinking I should replace the lever with a good quality push pop-up, and the copper branch tailpiece with a new PVC branch tailpiece. Any advice or suggestions on specific components to order / use would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

I’d probably replace the tailpiece with another brass one and leave the pop up.

I believe that’s a Delta pop up and it was one of the best ever made. I’d adjust it so that it works.

But you can replace it all if you want.

Much appreciate that tip, @Twowaxhack . It would also be less work :) ... is brass / copper better than PVC? I was surprised at the corrosion on the copper.

Any precautions as I try & unscrew the old copper tailpiece?

They don’t make 1.25” threaded plastic branch tees.

The easiest thing would be to unscrew the old one and replace with a new branch tee.

Or you could search for a 1.25” plastic slip joint tee and use a 1.25” threaded brass tailpiece to screw into your pop up.

Hold the pop up still with pliers and with another set of pliers unscrew the tailpiece counterclockwise.

If the threads break off in the pop up, use a razor knife and carefully force the tip of the blade in between the broken threads and the pop up threads they’re screwed into. They usually peel right out. New one screws in, of course use pipe dope on the threads.

You should unscrew the tailpiece clockwise, not counterclockwise Sorry !!!!!
Thanks :) I'm going ahead and replacing the whole assembly, as the pop-up lever port is bad as well. I found a flexible clear plastic ring on the sink hole when I removed the top of the drain. [EDIT: sink is cultured marble]

Questions:
  1. Was this meant to be removed before installing the replacement? How?
  2. Or have I damaged something which was part of the sink itself? How to recover?
  3. Use a bead of silicone around that rim before seating the drain top?
Thanks!
