Toilet has become hard to push the trip lever

American Standard toilet with the flush valve. Out of no where, it started getting very hard to push the lever. I've adjusted and played with water levels and chain length and it does get better with a short chain, it still is harder to push than originally. It's as if there's too much suction in the flush valve.

Because as the flapper gets old, it becomes soft and pliable. As you pull the chain, it tends to stretch upward rather than releasing its hold. I've broken a few chains due to this. It is just routine maintenance.
