Trying to get girl friend's old faucet/drain replaced. I got the faucet nearly finished no problem, but upon removing the drain I have stumbled on a big problem. As seen in the picture, there is a brass reducer going into the back of the sink where the old drain plug stem ran through. I can only move it about 1/4 of a turn.

The rubber gasket is old and cracked badly, so I can't simply retighten it and leave the old drain in there because it now leaks. I was hoping anyone here might have some helpful advice before I call in a pro. Thanks in advance!

That is just for the pop-up drain. Get a pair of channel locks and twist it off and remove the stem. Replacement parts are available for them.
