Simple Plumbing Question

Hi There,

Generally new to plumbing but loving it a lot. However, I was wondering what exactly a branch line is. I have mixed ideas as to what it actually means. I know this is most likely a simple thing to most but again I am new to plumbing and trying to get a firm grasp on it before I start my course next year.

I'm not a plumber, but I am relatively sure a branch line is any line off a main (both water and sewage) that that would connect to a fixture like tub, sink etc. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. See picture.
