Hello guys/gals

New to this forum. Anyway, here is my dilemna. Any input is greatly apreciated!

I want to replace my pedestal sink water spout and handles as my cats (when they were kittens) put deep scratches in the chrome with their claws.

Okay, the area under the pedestal basin is very tight. I really would only need to replace the spout as the handles are attached using a set screw and I am only having "cosmetic" issues.

Also, not only was the basin siliconed to the wall but instead of caulking it where it meets my tile backsplash it was grouted, instead.

CAN I replace the spout without dismantling the sink? Are there any special tools I can pick up for this?

On a side note, I am an electrician by trade so I am very familiar with using tools/working with my hands...etc.

Thanks in advance
Melissa

Most, not all, pedestal sinks are made to accept a 4" spread faucet. If this is the case, then almost certainly the entire faucet will have to be removed and replaced. If it is an 8" spread 3 piece faucet, then you can likely just replace the spout on it. If you could post a picture, we could answer that question better.

As far as what tools you might need, different faucets mount different ways, so it is impossible to say just what you will need. One tool that I have, and I hate, hate, hate, is a basin wrench. There are situations where the basin wrench is the only thing that will work, but I come home in a bad mood when I run into those. I have some tools that I have custom made to work on specific makes/models of faucets, just so I could leave the basin wrench in the truck.

I am currently uploading a few pics from my phone. I think I would want to replace my drain, also as the chrome has been scratched. Damned cats!!!! lol

Anyways, it looks very tight. I am thinking i WILL need to dismantle the pedestal. My fear is that in the process of chipping off the grout I will damage my tile and/or the porcelain of my sink.

Has anyone here ever encountered this issue? Also, is it normal practice to grout the bedestal sink to the wall as opposed to caulking it???

Thanks in advance

Yep, that's an 8" spread. With some small hands, this faucet could probably be dissected out of the sink and a entire new faucet could replace it. And yes, it looks like a basin wrench is going to be your friend on this installation.

Aaaargh!! He said the word that must not be said!! Oh, the pain!!

Once you remove the supply and the spout feed lines, you very well might be able to get to rest of the attachments. Word of warning, it won't be fun. Even if you dismount the pedestal, it is a tight spot to try to work in.

Pedestal lavs, I always grout, since the pedestal stops the bowl from moving around and cracking the grout. It just looks much cleaner than caulking. A true wall hung, I like to caulk, because the grout will always crack and work loose.

Lol....my Dad told me there is a little thing I can pick up for just such an installation...a basin wrench!!
Okay, thanks for all of the input you guys!

For a woman I have large hands, but I think in this case they will be small enough!!! lol
