Any Amazon stuff, and actually most online orders, I usually have the customer order it and have it shipped to them.
On their credit card, not mine.

If I order it, any problems fall to me, for returns or exchanges or not what they expected etc.

All a NO WIN NO PAY situation, no thanks.

In some cases I will do special things for special people, typically old people or life long customers. Most of the time money is not discussed until I hand them the invoice.

I’m near the end of my career. I have several hundred customers and I’m constantly turning down work. I cherry pick not only the job but also the person I’m working for. If you’re not a top level customer I block your number........

I totally agree with your position for the typical plumbing business.

I normally don’t even bother returning calls for estimates unless I already work for you. Then usually it’s a guesstimate that I’m not held to.

If someone doesn’t like it or complains, I block their number. That’s how it is now, I really don’t have to do this any longer......when my father passes away I will quit most likely. I’m involved in another business.....instrumentation fittings, etc.

Yes I do have some long time solid customers who never quibble or complain, and accept setbacks with materials and parts as no biggie.

Sometimes I just throw small stuff away and re-order, or throw into a “someday” bucket, it costs more to write up the labor of finding it in the first place.

Once in a while I can resurrect an old unused part and charge a few bucks, to almost break even.

I am also retiring soon, due to arthritis, can’t contort upside down as well under sinks, or hunch over into sump pits, or haul water heaters, or lift and replace toilets, without being laid up for a day or two after.

I just had a birthday a few days ago, of course my bday listed on this site is not exact, for safety.

I will post a link of me from about eight years ago, singing a song on a site where I record myself.
Hope you find it interesting!

Belated Happy Birthday, Jeff!

I can understand not wanting to order stuff and then getting stuck if the customer doesn't want to pay. My best friend's grandfather is one of those customers. Has people order stuff and then refuses to pay. I overheard the AC installer trying to explain to him that he could not return the unit he ordered for him and he couldn't afford to eat the cost. Old man was telling him to "figure it out". Jerk.

On the question about what big companies think about when ordering toilets-- no idea. But if it's the federal government they order the cheapest crap they can find no matter how low quality or high maintenance it will be. Unless there is some grift going on where someone high up is profiting from it personally or helping out a family member or buddy, they almost always go with the lowest bidder. Then they can't figure out why it costs so much to keep fixing stuff.

My opinion. Designers of toilets are dreaming if they think 1 gallon of water will carry solids 300 feet in a 4 in cast iron pipe. 16257520624421899399795320682315.jpg16257521460159065438436930003709.jpg

I do like the pressure assist, but 1.6 gal would be the min for me. I'm not sure how easy things are to find. I rarely purchase things myself.

I hate it when the government tells you they are from Washington and they are here to help! My old Lava lamp no longer works because I can't find 100 w incandescent bulbs! Tom Edison is spinning in his grave!

BlueSkyHigh, you may want to look for one of the 1.6gpf Toto Drake models then. 1,000 MaP score. They flush like a beast and don't splash. Toto Entrada is also good.

Saw this pic on FB. Is there an actual purpose for this drain? Is it a urinal? Condensate drain? Something else? or did someone just screw up here?
