Quick Question on extending Gas stove black pipe.

Planning on moving our kitchen (natural) gas stove over about a couple of feet to rearrange kitchen cabinets. To do so we would need to extend/move the gas (black) pipe and valve over about 20 inches. Can we just drill a hole in the wall stud (non-load bearing kitchen wall) to extend the pipe over to the area we need it moved to? Or do we have to go up into the attic and do the extension there, and then bring/drop the pipe down the wall at the new location? Also, is there any requirement as to how far up from the floor the gas line valve has to be? (The one that brings the gas to the stove)>

You can move it over innthe eall 20” by drilling the studs.

Refer to your stoves gas line placement in the instruction booklet for gas line location.

Thanks! I was afraid that I would have to go up into the attic and do the extension up there, then drop the pipe down the wall, and then put the new valve on. Do I need to put any kind of shield on the front of the 2x4 stud to protect the pipe? And do iIneed any kind of pipe sleeve around the black (gas) pipe where it goes through the 2x4?

It sounds like you know a little bit about piping but let me give you a suggestion. A lot of people use the yellow Teflon tape for natural gas piping. But I would highly recommend you use a good pipe dope. Any more the only time I use any Teflon tape is on compressed air lines. And while some people use pipe dope on top of Teflon tape, and even some manufacturers include that in their literature, in industrial applications, using dope with tape is strictly forbidden.
