Just to follow up on this, I had some PVC pipe work done recently, and the other sinks on that branch had solvent smell (and taste!) for a couple of days until I opened the valves on the new section and flushed the new pipes.
My theory is that there was air trapped in the pipes which picked up the solvent, and with the pressure cycles it kept leaking back into the main line. When I opened the new valves I purged the air and the solvent.
Anyway, if there's a chance there's an air bubble in your system, see if you can get rid of it, might work.
