I have an older peerless boiler system and need to drain it in order to repair a few radiator valves. It is forced hot water. When refilling what additives should I add, if any, and to what pressure should it be filled in relation to system temperature? Also, is there a filter system I should put on, and where do I add it?

Thanks

There should be a auto feed already installed on the system. There should be a valve before it that must be turned off before draining the system . After you do your work then all that is needed is to turn the valve back on. It will bring the pressure up to between 12 & 15 lbs. Once it reaches pressure vent the air from the system. No additives are needed.

Hello, thanks for reply..followup:

How best to bleed air after fill up? through radiators or pressure relief at boiler, or somewhere else in line? Also, is the 12-15 lbs at zero heat? Will I hear the system equalize - therefore I will not hear system filling anymore..

Bleed the system through the radiators. At zero heat it should be 12-15 lbs. There may be a slight increase of pressure after the boiler is up to temperature. Your expansion tank or bladder tank (depending on what you have) will prevent the pressure from climbing too high.
