Hello. I currently have a tank water heater that is in an exterior accessed closet built into my house. The closet has a fully louvered door. I am wondering if this allows sufficient venting to install a tankless water heater which vents outdoors, as opposed to a unit which requires a direct vent setup through a wall or the roof. Any insight would be appreciated.

This is the unit I was looking to install: Rheem Performance Plus 8.4 GPM Natural Gas Outdoor Tankless Water Heater ECO180XLN3-1 - The Home Depot

Thanks!

Jeff

1 sq. Inch of free area within the upper 12” and again the lower 12” of a confined space.
So for a typical 199k BTU tankless, the mfrs say 14.25” x 14.25” louvered screened openings.
Nobody would ever bother with louvered vent screens when a 2” PVC pipe run to the exterior is all that is needed for intake air on a condensing tankless WH

So its an outdoor closet and there is already a louvered door on it, so, that was why I thought it would make sense. So if I am understanding you correctly, than it would be acceptable? This is the door that is on it.

No problem, you can install it in the closet if there’s room, which there probably is

No, you cannot install an outdoor tankless in a closet. It must be mounted on the exterior of the house. If you want to install it inside the closet you need to use an indoor model with a vent to the exterior.

Rickyman is correct. You must vent the heater through a wall or roof.

You can not install an outdoor unit in a closet.

Outdoor units must be OUT DOORS not in a closet. 🤣
