The water going into my washing machine smells like sulfur/rotten eggs. It also is a dark grey color.
I have taken the outer shell off the washer to make sure the washtub is clean, but the smell is still there. On it's own, the washer does not smell, only when I do a load of laundry. That would probably rule out a fermenting lint ball, old sock under the agitator etc.
Can it be the hoses connected to the rear of the machine, or would it be something else?
In my home, I also have 3 toilets, 6 sinks, a shower and a tub...nothing else smells when in use.
Any ideas?

I you have one of the newer high efficiency washer it may be the washer itself. The big box stores sale a cleaner just for high efficiency washers.

Actually Washer is the best solution but if you don't have it then try some Home made solutions:

You can run empty machine through a hot wash cycle and add bleach. This will kill the bacteria and should eliminate the odor.

Hard water can also be a defect. It can leave deposits that can cause problems. A water softener should help, but a periodic vinegar and soda wash or bleach wash is still a good idea.

you can easily eliminate the smell and have a fresh, clean washing machine!
