Hi,
New to the forum and am hoping to get some advice. Currently have a 40 gallon gas AO Smith which is about 15 years old. It seems to be in good condition, but want to replace it before it breaks (husband is leaving on a year deployment and everything seems to break whenever he is gone). I've been doing a lot of research on the web and am finding conflicting information on which brands are the best for water heaters.

We are looking to upgrade to a 50 gallon and have gotten quotes for State, GE (although our HD contractors in the area aren't the greatest), and Bradford White.

Is there one brand that stands out above the rest (or a few that are on top)? Are there any to stay away from? Any other tips, suggestions, things to look out for while I am shopping for one?

Thanks in advance for all of your help!!! :)

Mrs Thompson, First thing first , I would like to thank you and your husband for the sacrifice you make for our country(and other country). although your water heater looks good ,it is at it's life expentancy. I to have had great luck with AO Simth water heaters and their customer services.

I agree. Just moderating posts here, I don't believe I have read about anyone saying anything bad about an AO Smith.

I do production plumbing and install 600 heaters a year, used to be in the thousands before the economy changed. We used A.O Smith and had to change due to issues relating to high temperatures in the desert and heaters being installed in the garages here, the combination caused them to trip the high temperature safety which would shut the burner off. That was a climate issue that may not effect you but they didn't fix the problem before we had thrown away over 250 heaters.

The last 4 years we have used Bradford White which has an occasional issue but they are quick to fix an issue and seem to be ahead of the market on technology. Rheem is also a good choice, I have used a few and have not had anything but simple issues with them.

There is only 3 companies A.O. Smith (they own American and State), Rheem, and Bradford White. Bradford White is only available at wholesale as well.

These are the the facts from my experience, I hope it will help you make your choice. As the others mentioned I want to thank your husband and your family for your service and sacrifices you all make.

Leon
