Hello, looking for the best way to hook up a new water line into my existing main line. The new line is for a shop 160' away I have 1" poly ready to go, but need help connecting it to my main line. Picture is my main line which is galvanized steel with a union to ABS. How can I hook into that? Thanks!

Turn water off and bleed your pressure down.

Take the union apart marked with red arrow.

Take the piping apart between the red lines I have marked.

Remove the half of the union that’s screwed into the bell reducer.

Get the appropriate size tee shown in yellow and screw the half union into the tee.

Then measure and purchase or thread a nipple of the appropriate length marked in blue to complete the piping.

But I also recommend replacing all steel water piping…….

But i just explained how you can connect to what you have.

Hi Twowaxhack,
I can't change all the steel piping, but I could change some of it, what would you recommend I go to instead for underground (roughly 5' deep). PVC?

Thanks,
-Ben

ABS??? Not typically used or potable lines. are you sure it ABS?

Hi Fishscreener,
I took a guess since I couldn't see it very well, however, when we were digging we pulled up a piece of what looks like to be a cut section of that pipe (probably what got cut to put in the current T in place). Luckily, it had some markings on it - 3408/C-3 AWWA-C901 Service pipe. When I throw that into a google search - comes up as Polyethylene.
With that in mind, would it be easier to just take out all the steel up to that Polyethylene pipe and put in a T for the new line and replace the existing T for the hose bib?
