I had a plumber (perhaps I use the term loosely?) install a new water heater for me last week. The old one was a 30 gallon, new one 40 - both gas. He had to turn the water off at the street to install a new gate valve.

Now I've got water hammer when I turn off the hot water anywhere in the house. I've tried turning all the hot water faucets on, in case there is air in the lines - don't know what else it could be, as no other work was done and pipes were not messed with.

Any ideas???

pressure reducing valve problem ? air in the lines would prevent water hammer, not encourage it.

I will ponder this problem. others will offer assistance soon.

I suspect the problem is not the hot water tank but something done with the installation of the new gate valve.

While a water heater is probably the most costly component in your home's plumbing system, most problems with it are usually fairly easy to figure out and fix. Water hammer is a destructive force that can damage residential or commercial plumbing systems. The only real solution is to completely drain the home's water supply system at the lowest point and gradually re-pressurize it.

could be pressure reducing valve problem also.. check you water pressure to make sure its not excessive.
