I have replaced my disposer with a new one. The existing drain pipe was about a half inch shorter than it needed to be to meet with the disposer, so I got an extender and cut it to size. It fits almost precisely as tight as it did with the old disposer. BUT, now I have two problems: it leaks from where the disposer and drain pipe meet, AND it drains slowly. I worked on the leaky bit by making sure the pipe was tight and straight on the rubber o-ring, and by tightening the flange. That mostly solved the problem. The reason I stopped working on it though, was because the water wouldn't drain.
There are NO CLOGS. New disposer, very clean pipes, and I know there isn't a clog beyond the pipe I can work on because the other side of the double sink drains just fine. The only think I could think of it that the drain line is mostly straight but at a very slight downward angle from the disposer. It seems it would be better if there was a u-shaped pipe/trap coming down from it. I can replace the existing straight pipe with that setup, but I really don't think that is the problem since this pipe setup was absolutely fine for the last 5 years. I also don't want to work on that all day only to have the same problem.
What else would cause the water to not drain there?
