i need plumbing 101 help. i have the following flexible fitting, and keep getting a leak at the base when i tighten things down. the flexible fitting came with a gray washer. i've tried that, and a normal plastic cone shaped ones, but both are causing a little bit of overflow where the arrows are shown pointing below.

i'm missing somthing simple would truly appreciate and help you can give.

The trap is installed backwards. The longer section of the trap should attach to the drain from the sink, the shorter side should attach to the Jbend coming out of the wall.

Obviously, the trap has been turned around to drop the inlet lower, and while I have been able to make this work, it is always a pain, as that is not the way the trap is designed to be installed. Is there no way to do away with the flexible fitting and turn the trap in the correct direction?

Thanks to both of you for your help. I had no idea the trap was backwards! I assumed that the last homeowner knew what they were doing.

Here's one more photo that shows the alignment of the backwards trap and the sink drain. Even if I turn the trap around, I don't think they would each line up.

So my follow up question is what's the best combination here to avoid the flexible fitting all together, if that's the best recommendation?

Do i need to extend the jbend? If guys tell me what to get, I'd very much appreciate it.

Someone must have cut the arm of the trap (part coming out of the wall) to short. Your going to have to remove and replace that section. I cant see how it connects to the line in the wall but it should just be a slop nut. You may have to enlarge the hole to remove and replace it.
