We have ver loud knocking noises, particularly when the toilet flushes and a faucet is opened at the same time. I have tried, twice, turning off the main water valve and opening up the line. Nothing has worked. Any idea what is wrong?

There are a few different things that could be causing this problem.

Let's start with a defective pressure reducing valve. Do you have one of these on your water main?

It could also be a loose washer in the main shutoff valve, if it is not a ball or gate valve.

Yes, we have a pressure reducing valve - I was under the mistaken impression that was the shut off valve - I turned it off and drained the air from the pipes. I'm assuming that did nothing of value, correct?

If you used the PRV valve to turn off your water I'm sure it's out of adjustment. I would get a pressure gauge to check your pressure. If it's to high your not doing your system any good. It should be set to be between 50-60 PSI.

Sorry for all the questions. Our pressure valve is in our laundry room on the lower level. I have looked everywhere but can't find the shut off valve. Is it normally near the pressure valve?
