Hi everyone,

I'm remodeling my basement and have access to some of my copper plumbing, so I figured I would modify some features while it's all accessible. I'm fairly adept at soldering copper, so no help needed there.

The one thing I really would like to get done is to install an inline ball-type shutoff on my main 1" supply line as it comes in from the street. This way, if I have any plumbing problems in the middle of the night I can easily shut the whole house off without walking the 50 or so yards up the driveway to the street shutoff.

My question is this - how do I install this inline ball valve into an existing installation without putting too much strain on the downstream plumbing? I know I need to cut a chunk of pipe out (~1.5" or so) of the main line, but what about the collars on the valve? I need to leave enough copper to snugly fit the valve - which means I'll have to put some serious pressure trying to pull the two pieces apart.

Any advice or suggestions?

Thanks!

I agree with John slip coupling is the way to go. I'm wondering if someone has done some repairs before because it's very rare that a basement home do not have a service entrance valve (shutoff valve) in the basement especially if you have a deep frost line.

Slip coupling - brilliant! Thanks for the advice guys!

Don't get me started. This house looks like it was put together by 20 different contractors all looking at different blueprints. N O T H I N G makes any sense in this darn house...

Thanks again for the tip!
