So Helene took out our local water supply. No running water since 9/27. They are working on fixing water main breaks but no telling how long it will be out.

My question, should I turn off my gas hot water heater…gas and water lines?

The thought is once the city water mains are fixed , we could get an influx of dirty silty water.

Please share your expertise!
Thank you!

I would shut off your gas and shut off the water inlet to stop contaminated water from going into your hot water. I guess it is too late for that though.

I added a filter to our winter home in Arizona for that reason, they shut the water off about once a month to repair something, and when they turn it back on its dirty for a while.
