How to seal or cap a shower drain.

So I've removed a stand up shower and plan on replacing it with a closet. I have an open drain pipe in the floor that needs to be sealed. From my readings I've concluded that proper sealing is required in order to avoid unwanted odors.

Question: what's the "by the book" process of sealing off/capping a shower drain pipe?

Cap it. Can't tell you how with out knowing the type pipe you have.

It's a white rigid plastic drain pipe.

Use a cap intended for pressure use, and solvent cement it onto the pipe. Most showers drains are a 2"
