Hello. Not a plumber. A real estate professional looking at an old building (5 story NYC tenement) in Harlem. This is the gate valve for main water supply line coming in from the street, before the meter. Can anyone provide an estimate of how old this valve might be? I've talked to the super. He doesn't recall the last time this valve was used to turn off the water to the building.

I'd like to get an idea how old this equipment might be. I know it's old. It's more helpful if a specific date range can be provided rather than just a vague adjective--"very old, so ancient...".

The handle has a hexagon bolt head that turns with a wrench, I think. Thank you.

My guess is that it's from the 1940's but I'm totally guessing.
Man that's interesting if you buy buildings, I would think you would hire a property manager who can help with this stuff.

Looks like possible asbestos too....

I drilled through some asbestos siding and the homeowner was a pediatrician. Home boy walked up and we were talking and I started to drill and at first he lunged to stop me then when the dust started to fly he ran about 20’ away and turned around screaming “ it’s Asbestos It’s asbestos “ over and over.

🤣 that was about 30 years ago. I’d drill through it holding my breath 💀
