Howdy, bought a house 6 months ago and slowly trying to fix the many and varied things that the previous owner did completely wrong. Currently trying to ditch the S trap on the bathroom sink, and install a (more) proper P trap and AAV. Running a roof vent is not possible at this time. Main problem is that the sink is installed almost directly above the floor drain. Is it possible to “fix” this mess in anyway? Thank you!

The fitting that the nut is screwed onto at the bottom of the cabinet is a trap adapter.

That fitting needs to be removed and a wye fitting standing up with a cleanout in the top and the 45 portion looking to the rear of the cabinet installed.

A short piece of pipe is installed in the 45 portion and then a st. 45 is installed looking vertical With a sanitary tee on top looking toward your sink outlet to install you ptrap.

From the top of the sanitary tee extend the pipe as high as possible while still being able to install/remove the Toot vent for service or replacement.

Problem is, it is a slip fitting coming out of the floor as well. It’s a pier and beam house and very difficult to get under, but I probably could to run pvc through the floor.

I think your description makes sense, is there any way to rig a slightly more proper P trap with this setup?

Thanks for the reply!

You could perform the assembly at Twowaxhack said with slip joint fittings. Not near as good, but it would be much better than your current S-trap. And you wouldn't need the wye cleanout as you can take the fittings apart. A couple of 45s, a tee for the drain with the AAV to the top, and a new P-trap assembly.

Check Amazon for "LASCO 03-4277 White Plastic Tubular 1-1/2-Inch Slip Joint Tee with Nuts and Washers" and "LASCO 03-4267 White Plastic Tubular 1-1/2-Inch Slip Joint 45-Degree Elbow with Nuts and Washers". I'm not sure is your drain is 1 1/2 or 1 1/4, but the description of these says they will work on both. But one of the comments says, "Though the description states that this T works for both 1 1/2 in and 1 1/4 in, it did not include washers for 1 1/4. You will also need to order 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 inch Reducing Slip Joint Washers to make this work."

I didn't look into the connection for the AAV, but I'm sure you can find something that will transition to it.

Good luck.

If the cabinet has a bottom I would cut some out and give myself the room I needed. Then just patch the cabinet floor.

If it’s pvc you might could use an inside pipe cutter and not have to cut the cabinet at all.

Or use a rubber coupling, shielded or not, cheap and dirty but sometimes it can be a transition that fixes a tough situation.
Not popular on here, and not always legal but commonly used.
Never use any bendy straw type of corrugated flexy coupling.

I'm having good luck with rubber Fernco couplers. I just use silicone grease and make sure the clamps are perfectly in place.
