I need to change a sewage pump in my basement. Can anyone tell me the best way to relieve the pressure on the pipes above the check valve? I don't want to cut the pipe and have sewage water spray in my face.

Thanks.

There should be some sort of a union below the check valve and above the pump. As long as you don't remove the check valve you should be OK.

John

Thanks. However, I need to replace the pipes a few feet above the check valve (there is a small leak at one of the elbows).

Like John said, remove everything below the check valve , remove pit lid - take a piece of wire, bend it in a u shap, put one end inside the bottom of the check valve, hold the other end on the outside of the check valve, slowly pull upward to open check to let waste drain in pit

I have done something something like that using a section of sewer cable.
