Help this girl finish a dishwasher install :)

Hi everyone!

Trying to replace my old Frigidaire dishwasher with a new Whirlpool.

Per the installation manual, the Whirpool requires a special elbow 3/8 x 3/4 (https://www.lowes.ca/brass-fittings/watts-a-158a-38-in-x-34-in-compression-fitting_g1200132.html) that i bought separately.

Here is where i'm running into issue, the water supply line appears to also be 3/8" in diameter...so it's the same size as the elbow connector and won't fit into it. How should I go about connecting them?

Do i need a special adapter to get the water supply to connect into the elbow?

If anyone is able to tell just from the pictures, do I indeed have 3/8" copper pipes?

I feel so silly asking but really hope i can get this figured out

It appears you have 1/2" water line. Measure the outside dimension of the copper and it is probably 1/2". As an apparent novice DIYer it will probably be easier for you to remove the copper line entirely and replace with a braided stainless steel dishwasher water line that is available at any plumbing store. You will get this done. Good luck.

hard to tell the size of that pipe , it looks to be regular 3/8'' tubing also know as 1/4''L

are you sure the fitting you bought is not 1/4'' instead of 3/8''?


just for a visual reference, is the water line to the dishwasher the same size as the water line supplying your kitchen sink faucet?

I measured the outside circumference of the copper water line to my dishwasher and it measures ~1.7".

If I reading this table correctly, it would mean the pipe is only 1/4"?

Ok, did some more reading & learning.

So I'm fairly confident my dishwasher supply line is 1/4" NPT.

I was worried because my dishwasher requires a minimum water supply line of
3/8” (outside diameter) but that is the outside diameter and I think 1/4" NPT meets that minimum?

So now I guess I'm back to figuring out how to connect this copper pipe to the dishwasher elbow, which i did confirm is 3/4" x 3/8.

So are you saying my supply tube is in fact ok? (that i dont' have to change it?)

you thought i just wanted to see in your cabinet,,,i have seen under hundred of cabinets, unless you are storing hummles i'm ok

Natalie. I recently purchased a new dishwasher and they now have a universal contraption on their dishwasher which is not common with older supply lines. I removed their new fitting and brought it to Home Depot, and was able to get a stainless steel flex dishwasher supply line which solved all the headaches.

Yeah, I'm thinking i may cut off the copper pipe a few inches after the shut-off valve, and use a compression fitting to hook-up a flex line that could then easily run to the dishwasher?

But i guess I'm just worried the pipe is now too small....

The stainless steel flex line has a rubber gasket inside of it so you would not need to use any compression fittings. Just Screw in and turn on.

do you have a dremel ? with a abrasive cut off blade?

cut as close to the solder joint as you can...then install a 1/2'' compression x 3/8'' compression reducing brass fitting

I don't have a dremel but I think i think i hopefully have enough room in there to use a hacksaw.

lowes is not showing the correct adapter,,,so get a valve, same thing, just an extra, you dont need it but the GD supply house didnot have what i want part
