Hi! Newbie here

My sprinkler system , where the water flows to the sprinklers has an old gateau valve that no long works and just spins (doesn’t tighten or loosen). It is in the closed position and not letting water pressure flow through the system.

I have never worked with PVC before and would like to know explicit directions on how I can replace.

it says 1” on the pvc coupler
Thanks!

If there is enough room above the valve to install a schedule 40 pvc Union :
Cut the pipe above put a wrench or pliers on the male adapter below the valve and remove the old valve install an pvc or brass ips valve on the bottom
Adapter remove the adapter from the old valve cut the appropriate amount of
Pipe off use pvc cleaner on the pipe and fittings you are going to glue
Apply glue to one pipe end and Union end then push them together ,spin the fitting on the pipe about a 1/4 turn push the fitting until it stops hold pipe and fitting with pressure for a minute or so wipe excess glue off don’t get ant on the face of the Union do the same to the other side ,tighten the Union by hand let it set up for 24 hrs( that’s what I do) next day put pipe joint compound on the face of the Union, use (heat grease) on threads on the Union and use pliers or wrenches on the Union turn the water on slowly
The grease can be bought at Home Depot it’s optional but I use it makes tightening and loosening the Union easier sorry for the long description!!!!!

Thank you so much !

Never did any of this before... I am sure it’s easier than my brain is making it out to be

IF you don't have one, it is worth the $15 or so, to get a PVC Cutter, they make a smooth, clean cut on the pipe, saves lots of time compared to cutting
with a hacksaw or other saw.....

Some recommend a pvc , others a brass... but consensus is a Ball Valve (not a gate) which I agree, but which is best for long term?

The pvc valve is less in cost, if it’s in the sun it may get brittle after time,it won’t rust, the bras ball valve is more costly will last a long time only thing is the handle and nut securing the handle will rust over time
The good thing about using a union is which ever you choose will fit in without modifying anything as long as it’s the same as what came out

Thanks!

You mentioned a union - would using a Tru Union valve be best for durability too?

for example:

Hayward QTA1010CSEG 1-Inch Gray QTA Series True Union PVC Compact Ball Valve with EPDM O-Rings https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CG4DGZ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Z1iMEbSC5J66Y
I guess it preference yes that would definitely work and if it failed for some reason you could change the body of the valve easily rather than the whole valvej just as long as you use the same brand valve again

Ok took everyone’s advice , did it myself and replaced the valve and had to replace the male adapter too, not the prettiest but works and hope it lasts a long time ( this union valve is a beast)
