Why don't they make them of a good quality, US made, stainless steel? In any event, water is one of the main byproducts of combustion.

Cost and the burner usually out lives the tank anyway.
The problem was most likely a leaking pilot tube nut/ferrule at the pilot end of the tubing. It probably could’ve been tightened up.
