Furnace wont work without return line

I pulled the return line off the burner and plugged it as I am doing a conversion. The burner sits below the tank so there should be plenty of pressure but it wont fire. If I bleed it the burner fires but shuts right down when I close the bleeder screw. Any ideas ?? Thanks

What happens when you hook it back up????,when you bleed do you get air?????

When I hook the return back up the furnace runs fine, when I bleed it not much air at all

What is a "return line" on gas piping? mumble mumble, must be old oil fired?

Yes oil fired but not old, in the northeast everyone has oil fired burners. Not much natural gas here

If you are converting to gas??? Why don't you leave the way it's connected I'm not an oil guy but I think that' there to prevent air in the system

I am not converting to gas, just putting in a new oil tank and most of the systems I see like mine only have one line coming to the burner

I agree, but if it won't run properly I'd leave it, or if you have an oil contractor near you ask
