this weekend had a bad clog in my kitchen sink. snaked the drain and nothing was helping but dit kept coming up. followed my pipes to a basement type area under the house (for reference I have a washer and dishwasher attached to same pipes as sink). I fpundits a hole that the pipe went into (top right pipe) when I lifted up on the pipe itlifted up and water started flowing out. the pipe was not attached to anything and I think there is just dirt at the bottom of the hole . this does not seem right ? letting the water out and lifting up did unclog my drain at least . just worried the owners of the apartment did not do things correctly.

No that is not right at all. That looks like a sump basket that is designed to remove ground/storm water from around the house. Are you sure you followed the correct pipe
