Does any one know what in the world this piece on the end of this hose is? I am a smog shop owner in California and these fitting 'probe tips' cost $30-60 ea! They got to be cheaper to make!

Even if a cheaper one was located, I'm pretty sure the AQMD would not approve it, unless their hands were in the manufacturer's cash register.

I am not sure who that is. But The guy we buy these from is a parts guy selling them out of his truck bed. He makes them in his garage but won't tell me what the tip is. we have to do a vacuum test every 3 days on these components to ensure they do not leak at all. Its not used in a way that anything can explode or harm anyone. It just sucks the emissions from the tail pipe to the smog machine. That break Left and right.

AQMD is the Air Quality Management District. Aren't they tied into the companies who produce this expensive tip?

Negitive. We get state inspections every 3 months and have never been asked about our probe tips as long as they pass the 'Sample system pressure test'. If any one was to worry about these it would be California air resource board (c.a.r.b.)or the CA smog check program officers.

people make poor quality ones out of braided hose that lasts probably around 100 smogs and good ones that last about 500 smogs but either way, we replace the a lot due to filed calibration.

I'm wondering if the CARB could provide you with the names of some suppliers with cheaper prices?

CARB has a list of suppliers and we have over 50 venders selling different 'probe tips' but we have the swivel, insulated hose, and crimper but I need to find out what the tip is. It'll cost somewhere in the $10-20 range to make them. At the end of the year that'll be a big savings between all of our shops.

We even have 'locking' pliers for our EVAP test that we make too. From vender these locking pliers are $89-109 ea. All they are are 18" needle nose pliers with 2 notches grind in one side and a whole with a 3.5" key ring in the other side of the handle to make 'locking pliers'. We now make our own, same exact ones that our venders make for $17.50 a pair. When we have tech's leaving at least one pair every 2 weeks on cars that adds up too.

Its all savings at the end of the year. I'm not trying to get over on anyone at all. I just figure if we can make our own, have extra material laying around in case we need more right now and be cost effective with it its a win win at the end.

I would only expect to hear talk like this in a "Big Brother Movie"
