Hi all,

My sink was draining really slowly yesterday, so I plunged it with a sink plunger. Right when I started plunging, big and small chunks of black corroded rubber started shooting out of the overflow hole. When you squeeze this rubber, it turns into a sort of paste that looks like mascara. I plunged for about 20 mins and it just made the issue worse; the water in the sink won't drain at all anymore. All I've seen for this sort of problem on the internet is people saying that the black rubber can be coming out from corroded braided metal cables from the water heater but I don't have those and the rubber is coming from below (I've never seen any black rubber specks coming out from any faucet in the house). Any insight or help would be appreciated.

1st thing you gotta do is remove the pop up drain assembly, vacuum out the drain and see what's in there,(cover) the overflow with a wet rag, you never know that might work
Last resort I snaking if you have to

Do you think I've done damage to the pipes below considering that all of that rubber came out? I also can't get the pop up drain assembly out; I've tried unscrewing it and pulling upward but neither of those methods worked. I'm now seeing that I might need to remove the pivot rod to get it out

That looks like old plumbers putty.

Glad it's not rubber from degrading pipes (hopefully). The maintenance workers came to the apartment yesterday and unclogged it with a snake, so problem solved for now.
