We have a drilled well with a depth of about 250 feet. Sometimes during the year our well water is light brown for a little while. We attributed this to a new fissure in the bedrock opening up(?). This spring when ever we use the garden hose water will be dark brown for a lot longer. I watered my garden this afternoon and afterwards when I took a shower the water was the color of dark tea. It stains the bottom and walls of the shower and toilet bowls. After a few hours the water will be more or less back to clear. My first thought was that the pipes that lead to the outside hose spigots are rusted, but this brown water, after long hose use, has been going on for about two weeks now. A blue plastic pipe (not PVC) leads to a two foot length of metal pipe that leads to the hose spigot. Any ideas?

Its nothing to worry about. The same thing happens in about 99% of wells.
Its just mineral build up in the pipes. When water flows in the same direction for some time, and then is sent another, sometimes it knocks some off the inside of the pipes.
When the water comes out it will look like tea grounds or have a brown tent.
Its nothing to get concerned about. It happen to me the other day after running a hose that has not been use for awhile.

Another thing that is possible is your water having iron and the well being somewhat of a low producer. When you use larger amounts of water, the water level in the well drops which kind of washes the walls of the casing causing iron to break loose and be pumped up into the house.

You might want to have your water tested. You probably need an iron filter.
