Hello, I have an existing Buderus boiler and indirect water heater that use to provide hot water for hydronic heating as well hot water. I have removed the radiators as have moved to forced air split units. Question is can I continue to use the Buderus boiler and indirect unit for hit water or should I replace it with a regular hot water heater. thanks in advance!

Hi, just checking to see if anyone had a view. Thanks!!

Why not? If it produced hot water in the summertime when there was no call for hydronic heating it should continue to provide hot water any time, even when there is no hydronic heating.

Efficiency and space utilization are another question, but up-front costs will be zero. When you replace it you probably want to use a standard tank.

Does your Buderus boiler use oil or gas? What about a storage tank for hot water?

The reason I ask is the boilers that use oil today will be quite costly to run for hot water only. In fact, I bypassed the domestic hot water part of my dad’s boiler since it was so costly to run just for hot water. Added a conventional electric hot water heater and I bet the payback is less than a year. (I did the installation no plumbers or electrician…I work cheap for Dad!😉) Filling his oil tank was $800!

If I was in your situation I’d simply remove the entire thing and sell it, and add a conventional hot water heater.
