Black specks in urinal

I serve as quality control manager for a janitorial company and have had issues in more than one building with black specks (looks like pepper) showing up in urinals. Usually appears to have originated from the water holes. Any ideas of the cause of this?

If it has a Sloan/Zurn flush valve it could be the neoprene diaphragm or Vacuum breaker cup deteriorating and flaking off. Replace the diaphragm assembly and the vacuum breaker and see if that could be the source.
If the diaphragm looks bad you may still get some specks after you change it from residual flakes lodged inside the urinal. It's just a guess. I've never noticed any specs in a urinal but I've never looked for them either.

Just a guess, but if you increased the water pressure to the urinals, I'm wondering if the sediment (or pepper) would go away?
