My bathtub handle has become quite loose. It appears as if it has a cap to allow me to access the screw, but I've tried, and it does not pop out.

I'll attach a photo. Can anyone help?

Thanks!!

The silver part with the ridges pops out. Use a sharp knife if you’re allowed to use knives.

there’s a thin oring that helps hold it in.
I’ve spent quite some time trying to pry off the silver cap looking thing from the plastic. As far as I can tell it’s fused together. Would a knife really allow for something more than all the thin metal objects I’ve already tried to use? There is no space for anything to get between the plastic and the silver part.

Yes a knife or a razor blade. The silver part with the ridges is plastic. It just pushes in and an oring helps it stay put.
