Applying PTFE on the thread of compression fitting is a common mistake for DIYer. Is it necessary to undo the fitting and remove the PTFE if no leak?

I've learned that for compression fitting
  • Never apply PTFE tape to the thread
  • The water seal is done by the olive (O-ring) not the thread
  • Suggest replace olive every time if undo the fitting
  • If have to reuse the olive, wrap small amount of PTFE around the olive may help to reseal the fitting

My question is:
If I’ve applied PTFE on the thread by mistake. However, there is no leak.
Is it necessary to undo the fitting and remove the PTFE?
What would a professional plumber do?

I've sometimes used tape on compression plumbing fittings and always on flare refrigerant line fittings.
Reason: So I can take it apart years from now. Especially true if the parts are dissimilar metals.

Be sure to keep the tape off of the ferrule seat. Tape low.
